Otto has finished something he's been working on something for a while, now. He finally brings that something to Clair, sitting down next to her and holding up a handful of wires terminating in small round pads. He grins.

"Look. Cutaneoneural contact pads."

The grin looks a bit hopeful. Clearly, this is something he's been working on her with for a while.
Ockette: Hm?ockette on June 17th, 2008 05:33 am (UTC)
Clair peers over the edge of her glasses at them, setting down her own notebook. "Alright? Tell me more."

Probably not the response he was hoping for.
darkoctavius: Ooooctooopuuuusdarkoctavius on June 17th, 2008 05:51 am (UTC)
At least it wasn't the "No," without looking up that he usually got.

He holds up one of the leads.

"It doesn't quite offer the same amount of control as the standard direct neural connexion, but I've gotten it to the level of steady standard-dexterity manipulation"
Ockette: Hm?ockette on June 17th, 2008 05:56 am (UTC)
Well, it's a better-looking idea than what he usually has.

"Still has to be implanted into the spinal column?"
darkoctavius: octocrackdarkoctavius on June 17th, 2008 08:50 am (UTC)
"Not at all. Completely cutaneous. The leads are attached to the skin with a conductive glue."

He has that look on his face that she's been seeing a lot, lately. That Science is GOOD! look. More specifically, that Science is GOOD when it does what I want it to! look. And what he's been wanting it to do for months on end, now, is put actuators on their daughter.

As though he can't bear the sight of someone with the usual four limbs or something.
Ockette: Claw!ockette on June 17th, 2008 02:44 pm (UTC)
"I thought we decided that wouldn't work. The brain can't send enough information to the skin to control them."

Clair is giving him a Mom look. Talk fast, Otto.
darkoctavius: Ooooctooopuuuusdarkoctavius on June 18th, 2008 04:29 am (UTC)
He counters it with a Misunderstood Scientist Look.

"That was before I perfected the conductive nanites that--before you object--are programmed not to survive outside the gel."

Is that a bit of a suspicious shade to that look? A quirked eyebrow? "Do you doubt me, Clair? Do you think that, perhaps in my retirement from active villany, my scientific brilliance has dulled?" Ignore the grin trying to escape as he attempts to eye her in the semi-threatening way that he used to.
Ockette: Scowlockette on June 18th, 2008 04:35 am (UTC)
Otto, that look hasn't worked on Clair since she jumped you in the backseat of her boyfriend's car. The grin'd be a better bet.

"More tests. A lot more tests. When you're done testing and she's sixteen, then you can make some actuators for Angie."
darkoctavius: smiledarkoctavius on June 18th, 2008 06:08 am (UTC)
"You aren't in the least bit curious? Maybe it isn't I who's dulled."

There's that grin.

"Besides, what makes you think I haven't tested them inside out and upside down already? What d'you think I do in that workshop all the time, anyway?"
Ockette: Scowlockette on June 18th, 2008 06:14 am (UTC)
"Of course I'm curious. But I haven't seen you bringing any guests home and I'm not about to let our daughter be the primary live test subject."
darkoctavius: smiledarkoctavius on June 18th, 2008 06:37 am (UTC)
"Bah, I don't need any 'guests,' I can demonstrate it for you, myself."

He seems perfectly intent on doing so, as well, unbuttoning his shirt.

Woo. Take It Off.
Ocketteockette on June 18th, 2008 03:46 pm (UTC)
"Your nervous system doesn't have much in common with hers," she points out. "It needs to be a child."

But by all means, take it all off.
darkoctavius: smiledarkoctavius on June 19th, 2008 04:22 am (UTC)
He does. Behold him in his shirtlessness, Clair. It's not terribly different to all the other times you've done so. He disconnects his actuators with the usual sharp sound and tiny wince, and calmly disconnects the direct neural interface, replacing it with the new one.

"What d'you suggest I do? Steal a random Nexus urchin? I'm sure that'll go over wonderfully," he snerks.
Ockette: Looooomsockette on June 19th, 2008 04:26 am (UTC)
She watches him, and she is impressed by the needleless new interface. Very. Just cautious.

"No. No, I couldn't... But we'd want stats relatively close to Angie's, if I..." Fear the thinky-face.

"There's a tea in the Sanctuary that's marked as a child-LOL."
darkoctaviusdarkoctavius on June 19th, 2008 05:32 am (UTC)
He waves the actuators at her and one curls round to pre-emptively block her path.

"I'll go and get some, then," he answers, already starting the complex tentaclewaving involved in threading them through his shirt. That, apparently, was that.
Ockette: Claw!ockette on June 19th, 2008 05:44 am (UTC)
"She's bigger than I was at her age, but there's not going to be anyone genetically closer to her than I am, as her mother..." Oh hell, she's getting into the idea. "Did you already have a set of the interface made to size?"
darkoctaviusdarkoctavius on June 19th, 2008 07:29 am (UTC)
Otto is, by now, enshirtened. "Yes, actually. Hope springs eternal in the mind of every scientist. Therefore, since she's already larger than you were, I'm the wiser choice. Lest you forget, she has my genetics, too."

And toward the door he heads.
Ockette: Clair Mommyockette on June 19th, 2008 07:32 am (UTC)
She's on his heels, her own arms lifting her to his height. "But I'm female, and nervous development follows different patterns in men than women."
darkoctaviusdarkoctavius on June 19th, 2008 08:06 am (UTC)
"Not that different. Despite what the cynics might say, men and women are not seperate species." He stops and looks at her. "Clair. I'm no more a stranger to self-experimentation than you are. I've tested this armature on myself for decades. I'll see this through."

Easy. Don't get impatient with your wife, Otto. Marital spats get ugly with giant metal tentacles involved....
Ockette: Scowlockette on June 19th, 2008 11:52 am (UTC)
Yes, they've done that, haven't they?

"Different enough," she says seriously. "This is neurology, Otto. My field. Trust me."
darkoctavius: Asshatdarkoctavius on June 21st, 2008 03:25 am (UTC)
"And it involves the refining of actuator technology. My field."

Well. Out the door he goes. Seems someone is as stubborn as ever. And so is Otto.

Clearly, it doesn't occur to either of them that they could work together on this.
Ockette: Clair Mommyockette on June 21st, 2008 07:02 am (UTC)
She's right on his heels. Really, Otto, you gave her the means to keep up with you.

"That's why you need to be in charge of the experiment, which you can't do if you're two years old."
darkoctavius: smiledarkoctavius on June 22nd, 2008 01:49 am (UTC)
Okay, now this has gone from slightly irritating to strangely amusing.

"Oh hoh, now you've gone and turned this argument around. You do realise that I can use that exact line on you with your neurological expertise, which you also cannot use if you're two years old?"

He heads for the portal. "So. Impasse. Neither of us can self-conduct this experiment alone and neither of us is willing to steal a random Nexus urchin. Which leads us to one conclusion."

And what, pray tell, would that conclusion be as Otto triggers the portal at what turns out to be... evening, thus revealing a populated Sanctuary? "Whoever reaches it first, wins."

Really. They don't even need an LOL to be children, do they?
